RYKER was founded by leading IT GIS professionals from the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD), the nation’s 6th largest electric public utility.
With nearly twenty years in energy delivery, including over a decade at SMUD, I've navigated the challenges GIS departments face supporting utility operations, often with limited resources and ongoing budgetary constraints. Throughout my career, finding GIS professionals with the right combination of skillsets for an electric utility always proved challenging. Furthermore, finding truly qualified contractors was nearly impossible. Even when we eventually found help, the results were underwhelming. We were sold on inflated resumes and empty promises that led to unmet expectations, unhappy business units, and long-term buyer's remorse.
Unfortunately, this experience wasn't unique to SMUD. Colleagues across the US have faced similar struggles which is apparent, given the industry’s growing demand for geospatial technologies and not enough qualified workers to help in this space. Frustrated with the status quo, I saw a chance to create a solution that could help other utilities in our same position. We needed dedicated resources and expertise that could hit the ground running and bring value to our organization. Fueled by my passion for GIS and unwavering belief in this vision, I took the leap – leaving a comfortable job to invest my life savings to launch RYKER.

What’s in a Name?
In crafting our company name and logo, every detail mattered. It wasn’t just about what sounded good or looked appealing on paper; the goal was to capture our brand's identity, values, and aspirations in a succinct and memorable way.
The name RYKER is derived from Nordic culture and represents strength, leadership and a willingness to stand up for what one believes in.

The Lightning Bolt
Our origin: RYKER’s founding members came from an electric utility company and the electric utility sector is our primary area of expertise.
Norse roots: Upon closer inspection the lightning bolt is comprised of 2 triangles which represents the two horns on a medieval Nordic helmet.
